The controls can even be locked to avoid accidentally changing settings during a shot or when the camera is out of reach on a rig. The first thing to get used to is how much size and weight shooting with any external recorder adds. The use of such a big screen immediately limits your ability to 'run and gun.' If you're just trying to grab some quick, on-the-move, on-the-fly footage, the Video Assist will slow you down. However, if you have the few extra moments to consider each shot, it increases the chances of you getting it right as well as increasing the quality of your footage.

The short answer is that it's a great way to expand the tools for, and maximize the quality of, video capture on your current camera. The waveform display provides a digitally encoded waveform that shows the luma (brightness) levels of your video signal. Luma levels on the scope will be in roughly the same position relative to those within the frame. For example, if part of your sky is overexposed you will see it in the same horizontal position on the waveform display as it appears in the frame. If you are monitoring video which is high contrast, you might not see any values in the mid grays. However if your video levels are low, you might see most of the waveform down the bottom of the scope.

Blackmagic Video Assist lets you record all standard formats and frame rates. You can record in SD and HD, up to 1080p60 on all models, and on Video Assist 12G HDR models you can record all the way up to 2160p60. They prone to build up heat that affects the sensor noise, to use strange codecs internally, to be very picky about power, they are kinda painful to rig, and so on, and so on. BM cameras are great paper tigers but from my experience are not very reliable, part of the reason why you almost don't see big movies shot on BlackMagic. This hands-on training guide will teach you the art of sound editing, sweetening, recording, mixing and mastering. Beginning audio editors and assistants will find clear workflow driven lessons, while seasoned audio professionals will quickly learn Fairlight’s user-friendly tools to create incredible soundtracks.

It also records HD H.264 proxies in real time making it easy to share media around the world in minutes. This means images always maintain unprecedented resolution and quality for color, keying, compositing, reframing, stabilization and tracking in HD, 4K or 6K. URSA Mini Pro includes a 4‑pin XLR industry standard power connector that works with 12V to 18V external power supplies. That means it’s easy to use the camera with all of your existing power supplies and batteries!
Blackmagic PYXIS supports the optional Blackmagic URSA Cine EVF to make outdoors and handheld shooting accurate and easy. Customers get an integrated high quality 1920 x 1080 color OLED display with built in proximity sensor, 4 element glass diopter for incredible accuracy with a wide focus adjustment. The short life of the batteries is annoying, but not a deal breaker, I got 8 generic LP-E6 batteries for under $100 and they work fine, I keep the chargers going during filming. The 2 biggest annoyances to me are the (1) battery life indicator, which is a guess not a exact estimate (it changes based on your settings while shooting). (2) The image quality seems to be contingent on the cleanness of the HDMI line out, I got different IQ results from different cameras I tried, some good - some bad.

DaVinci Resolve Mini Panel
It's also a fairly well-connected little beast, though, which makes it easy to hook up to most cameras. High performance rack mount flash storage solution, features 8 or 16 TB capacity, RAID 0 flash memory core, 10G Ethernet, 1G Ethernet, USB‑C, Dropbox and Google Drive sync for distributing files globally. Includes 10G Ethernet for high performance and HDMI status monitoring. Dropbox and Google Drive sync allow the distribution of files globally. Next generation mini converters featuring 12G-SDI, supports all SD, HD and Ultra HD formats up to 2160p60.
Optional side hand controller for URSA Mini Pro with record start/stop, iris and focus buttons built in. Standard rosette and LANC for attaching to the side of the camera or relocating it to the front of the camera with the URSA Mini Shoulder Kit. Gold mount compatible battery plate with Molex connector for attaching third party batteries to URSA cameras. Optional PL lens mount which features contact pins for compatibility with Cooke’s i/Technology protocol allowing lens information to be saved as metadata and used in software like DaVinci Resolve.
Disk Recorders
Blackmagic PYXIS supports creating a small H.264 proxy file in addition to the camera original media when recording. This means the small proxy file can upload to Blackmagic Cloud in seconds so their media is available back at the studio in real time. The ability to transfer media directly into the DaVinci Resolve media bin as editors are working is revolutionary and has never before been possible.
Yes, and the BS1H has almost none of the pros you mentioned earlier. And if you want to record RAW, you still have to attach BM Video Assist. @Samuel Dilworth No built-in ND filters, fixed LCD, but by all means, it's as close to perfect as one can probably get at this price point.

The cheaper alternatives would be one of the Black Magic Pocket Cinema Cameras, or possibly a Panasonic mirrorless, but this is already so cheap that a couple of jobs will pay it off. I still see a MAJOR selling point adding a hinge to the screen as is, at the cost of $1-200 (can't imagine being more...). Includes a 12” LCD, graphical keyboard, macro keys, transport controls and more. Fairlight studio console legs at 8º angle for when you require a slightly angled working surface. Fairlight studio console legs at 0º angle for when you require a flat working surface.
I assume this is an entry-level camera and the folks looking into this might not want to get too many additional accessories, line a monitor, and such. Adds analog and digital connections, preamps for mics and instruments, sample rate conversion and sync at any standard frame rate. Add up to 2,000 tracks with real time processing of EQ, dynamics, 6 plug‑ins per track, plus MADI for extra 64 inputs and outputs. Adds 3 MADI I/O connections to the single MADI on the accelerator card, for a total of 256 inputs and outputs at 24 bit and 48kHz.
It’s controlled via the USB‑C so you don’t have to worry about manually starting or stopping the SSD recorder. Shooting RAW in 12K preserves the deepest control of detail, exposure and color during post. Best of all, Blackmagic RAW is designed to accelerate 12K for post production, making it as easy to work with as standard HD or Ultra HD files. It is highly optimized, multi‑threaded, works across multiple CPU cores and is also GPU accelerated to work with Apple Metal, CUDA and OpenCL. So you can always work with your camera RAW files without having to make proxies.
It’s not really viable in the context of showing something to a director while other people twiddle their thumbs. It's not only about size, but having all those features without needing extra accessories. All the inputs and outputs are already included, the large batteries attaches directly to the back of the camera. The only thing really missing is a viewfinder or an articulated monitor, which admittedly ads to the cost. "where else could the display go?" They could've make a folding screen, like on old URSAs and the majority of mirrorless cameras. You can say it would increase the cost, but I'm sure that a hinge would increase the price less than buying an extenal monitor.
